Happy New Year from Poland! 🇵🇱

*Obvi, the above pic is not in Poland. Keep reading to find out where we've been these past fews weeks!

How are you doing, love?

If you're anything like me - you're probably recovering from a whirlwind end-of-2021 and trying to figure out what your 2022 is going to be all about!

I've been a bit quiet around here lately - and that's because Matt and I made the crazy (awesome, scary, intense & thrilling) decision to relocate to Gdansk, Poland for a year! We moved here in October and have been sight-seeing, traveling, settling in and getting adjusted to Europe/Polish life ever since.

We've luckily had the opportunity to relocate through Matt's work, so fortunately we've had more help than most...but HOLY CRAP do we have a whole new respect for anything that is brave enough to move to another country! 🤯

It's been challenging in lots of ways for sure (think - finding new friends, doctors, vets, navigating a completely different healthcare system, figuring out how to grocery shop, order (& receive) deliveries, get bank accounts, tax numbers, Polish phones, etc.) ALL IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE. 😅😅😅

Are we totally bat sh*t crazy for doing this?!

Perhaps... lol.

The Pros

So why'd we do it?

Although Matt may take a little more convincing (ha!), the benefits of living in Europe, being an EU resident and traveling around Europe for a year are what makes it all worth it!

Firstly, the main reason we wanted to move here was to experience some good ol' European work-life balance. Most European countries legally entitle workers to 26-30 mandatory vacation days per year - and that doesn't even include the double or triple amount of National Holidays (aka "Bank Holidays”) that most EU countries also observe. (The U.K. even has "Stress Leave" where if your doctor determines you're too stressed out - you're required to stay home and enjoy life (and get paid full time by your employer) until you're in a better place to work again...) I KNOW....

We're planning on a solid 5-6 weeks of vacation minimum in 2022. 😉

Oh, and over extended work days aren't a thing here AT ALL. As one of Matt's colleagues explained to me at a social work event, *if* you go into the office for your work day in Poland, the first hour is for coffee and socializing, then you work for maybe 2-3 hours, then you have your hour lunch, then another hour of coffee and socializing, then another hour of a few quick wrap up emails before leaving before 4 so you beat traffic. The life, right?!

When I explained to Polish, German and Russian friends at a recent Internations Event (a great way to make new friends in foreign countries, fyi!) that many Americans/American Companies frequently work 12 hour days, or brag about the amount of hours they worked that week like it's a badge of honor - they all looked at me like I was freaking nuts and speaking about an alien way of life!

Needless to say, the Europeans work to LIVE.

NOT live to work...

(Emily in Paris on Netflix is a GREAT example in the American - European Work/Life differences, btw! And one of my fave shows EVER.)

Being totally immersed in this culture has been extremely refreshing, relaxing and beneficial for us - even if it does take some extra work and a few (or a lot...lol) of mistakes along the way.

The Best Part

THE TRAVEL, OF COURSE!!!!!!

We're talking - castles, beaches, culture, delicious food, and fairytale-esque villages galore!

Speaking of which - we just got back from an island hopping stint in the Canary and Portuguese Islands!

We visited Tenerife in the Canaries for Christmas, and Funchal, Madeira for New Years Eve. These islands are located off the west coast of Africa, and we're super warm and temperate for the holiday season. (We had to get a break from the Poland cold, after all!)

Follow me on Instagram for more videos of the INSANE NYE Fireworks show in Funchal!

And to watch all of our upcoming travel adventures, of course. :) ✈️
